South Brent Primary School

Spring Term Activity

South Brent Primary School Report

June  2019

We are delighted to inform you of the following developments and activities that have taken place at school:

Percussion Showcase in School

James Martin, our Percussion (drumming) Teacher welcomed the whole school children and parents of his pupils into assembly to allow them to showcase their skills.  The children put on fantastic performances!

Cyclo Cross

The Cyclo-Cross squad participated in a very high level County Final at Haldon Forest.  The course was tight with a variety of features that our cyclists dealt with well.  The children performed to their very best and finished an overall 4th best in the whole County.

Key Stage 1 Multi-Skills Festival

All of our KS1 children attended the latest Multi Skills Festival at KEVICC where they took part in a variety of activities from cup stack to a coconut shy type activity.  Alongside our KS1 children, South Brent Primary School Sport Leaders also assisted with the running of the event alongside Yr11 students from KEVICC.  They all had a great morning of sport.

Year 6 School Games Competition

20 of our Year 6 children participated in the Winter Games at Torbay Leisure Centre.  Although they did not finish the Cross Country race in the medal positions, they all put in 100% effort to get around the 2000m course.  The children also sampled some new sports in the form of Taekwondo and Fencing amongst others.

Handball Partnership Finals (Champions)

Having won the Totnes Handball Finals, the Yr5/6 squad were put through their paces against a staff team in preparation for the Dartmoor School Sport Partnership Finals.  At the finals, the children battled and fought for every ball in all of their matches and finished in second place behind Bradley Barton in their pool on goal difference.  They played Bovey Tracey in a closely fought semi-final, eventually winning 3v2.  Into the final they went, playing against Bradley Barton who they had lost to in the group stages.  Having learnt their lessons from the first game, they played superbly, winning 6v4 and ending as Champions.

Year 5/6 Trip to Bellever, Dartmoor

The children in year 5 and 6 went on an exciting trip to Bellever on Dartmoor where they learnt about the landscape, Bronze Age settlements and burial rituals from Bronze Age times. They also learnt how quickly the weather can change on Dartmoor, as they started their walk in glorious sunshine, had their lunch in the snow and then walked back in sleet. Despite the cold weather, the children enjoyed their walk and it was a great way to finish this term’s topic work.

Easter Raffle

The children were very excited for the School Association Easter Raffle draw which took place during our Easter assembly.  Three eggs were won in each class and every child was presented with a small chocolate treat to bring home.  The raffle raised close to £195 for the School Association which will be put towards enriching the children’s learning.

September Menu Tasting with Rob Stevens

Rob Stevens, our Ventrus Executive Chef, visited the school to provide  tasters from the new school menu due to launch in  September 2019.  Ventrus will be taking over the lunch provision from September and look forward to our very own creative menu.   Rob was very impressed by the politeness and manners of our children.

Visit from Ivybridge Community College

Our Year 6 children who are transferring to Ivybridge Community College in September were visited by Mrs Feeney and Mrs Setter.  Their visit gave the children more Secondary school information and the opportunity to ask questions.

RNLI Visit

Representatives from the RNLI visited the school to deliver an assembly on safety on our beaches and coastline.  They also heard about the how lifeboat rescues work, the history of the RNLI, the work of this charity, volunteering and much more.  We know the children found the session valuable and are sure it will help them to keep themselves safe at the beaches this Summer.

Year 3 & 4 Trip to Morwellham Quay

The 3/4 classes went on a fantastic educational visit to Morwellham Quay near Tavistock.  Dressed up as Victorians, the children attended a Victorian school and discovered what the Victorian children were taught and how they were punished!  The children also took a tour of two different houses to learn about the very different lives of rich and poor Victorians.  After an alfresco lunch in the Victorian courtyard, the children enjoyed a train ride through a copper mine where they learnt about the working conditions and lives of Victorian miners - they were shocked to discover how young some children had to start working in often very dangerous conditions.  The children also worked hard in the afternoon to produce their own length of rope which they straightened out with a boys versus girls tug-of-war.

Cyclo-Cross

A number of children from South Brent took part in the last Cyclo-Cross event of the year at Stover.  Summer was the runner up in the Yr5/6 Girl's race, which was a great achievement considering she competed on her BMX bike with just the one gear!  The Yr3/4 squad all competed amazingly well and finished as the Dartmoor School Sports Partnership Champions.

Hockey - Devon County Finals

South Brent took their two qualifying teams to the Devon County Hockey Finals.  This was the first time any school from Dartmoor had two teams competing in the finals!  The 'B' team were competitive and took 5 points from their 6 games.  The 'A' team managed to finish 3rd in their group and played Sticklepath in the quarter finals.  In the Semi-final, they were up against Woodbury (overall champions) but unfortunately lost 2v0.  In the bronze medal match, they overcame Compton A to take the medals.  3rd place in a County Final is some achievement.

Basketball Tournament

All of our teams competed and have improved so much as this year has gone on.  Our ‘Red’ team won all of their games throughout the year and were an absolute joy to watch.  Well done to everyone who has been part of the Basketball journey.

Year 6 Leavers and Foundation Class Photo

A photographer from Tempest visited the school to take the Year 6 Leavers photo and the Foundation class photo.

Standardised Assessment Tests – SATs

Our Year 6 children took their SATs.  They started each day with a hearty breakfast served by our team of volunteers.  The children took on each day with a fantastic, responsible attitude and they all worked very hard.  Many thanks to all the staff that came in to support the breakfast provision and to our School Association who very kindly funded the breakfast!

Ventrus’ Executive Chef - EYFS children

Unfortunately Rob Stevens was unable to make his planned visit to the school due unavoidable staff absence in another Ventrus school.  However, the EYFS children still got to bake some delicious, healthy Banana & Fruit Flapjacks with Miss Bassett and Mrs Edwards.  Parents joined the children during the afternoon to share the flapjacks.

Year 3 & 4 Athletics Festival

Our Year 3 & 4 children travelled to KEVICC to take part in an Athletics Festival.  They had a great morning competing alongside children from our learning community.  A great opportunity to have some practice for our own Sports Day.

Year 5/6 Super 6 Golf

We took 3 Super 6 Golf squads to Stover School for the annual Sport Partnership Finals. The children applied their training to ensure they played their best golf avoiding water hazards and bunkers. The children had a fab day trying something new.

EYFS Class Assembly

We were all very proud of the EYFS astronauts (class) as they stood in “Space” (on the stage) and took the audience on a journey through the Solar System.  Super dancing, great facts and a brilliant finale.

Year 3/4 Super 6 Golf

Our Year 3/4 Tri Golf squads participated in the School Sport Partnership finals. They applied their learnt skills really well in a range of activities from putting to driving. Both squads did really well with Mr Burstow’s team finishing runners up. They progressed on to the county finals.

Hockey Finals - Marjons

South Brent took two teams to the annual Plymouth Schools Hockey Festival comprising of teams from all over Cornwall and Devon. Both teams performed exceptionally with the B team finishing 4th in the Plate competition and the A team completing their last ever game together as Cup Champions; they won all of their games without conceding a goal! It is such an achievement to see our school named amongst some of the top schools in our area. Special mention to Olly and Anya who won ‘Players of the Tournament’ out of approximately 500-600 children.

Thank You Assembly

This was a great opportunity to say thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who help and support us throughout the year.  Each of our classes performed various pieces to the audience.  We then welcomed everyone over to the Den for refreshments.

Health and Science Week

The children enjoyed the week learning about health and science through a wide range of activities, such as; ‘how grippy are your shoes?’, ‘how much sugar is there in our energy drinks‘ and ‘what forces are used to throw a beanbag?’.  It was  been great to welcome a range of visitors into school, from Basketball to dental hygiene.

Daily Mile – A Running Start!

We welcomed an Ultra Marathon runner, Adam Holland into school to launch our ‘Daily Mile’.  The run now takes place each morning with the children (and Staff!) running at their own pace accompanied by music. Runners complete as many laps as they can in 10 minutes.  The children have impressed us all with their stamina and determination.  The emphasis is about getting active and enjoying the time regardless of how many laps they achieve.

Health and Science Week -  Open doors

We welcomed parents and carers into school to see what the children had been learning during Health and Science week.  The children were very excited to show you their finding from the various experiments that they carried out.

Summer Games - County Finals

41 children took part in a variety of sports at Exeter Arena in the Summer Games County Finals. Our Tag Rugby and Athletics squads were really competitive in a strong ‘county-wide’ field of schools. Our Superstars group also attended and sampled many different sports that were on offer including Fencing, BMX riding and Taiko Drumming. Lastly, our Golf squad (who were runners up at our Partnership Finals) managed to eclipse their previous score by 90 points resulting in them being Devon County Champions! What an amazing achievement.

New September EYFS - Playground Games

We welcomed the new September 2019 EYFS children into school to play some playground games with Miss Bassett.   This was the very first of many induction events that we offer to help the children become familiar with the school building, other children, Miss Bassett and the EYFS team.

Ventrus Sports Day - Exeter Arena

Thirty Six children from South Brent participated in the second annual Ventrus Sports Day in Exeter. They performed superbly, particularly in their relay race where some of the best ‘Primary level’ baton exchanges were witnessed. The children scored a whopping 338 points to retain the Ventrus title and bring home the trophy again.

I would like to thank everyone who gives up their time to support the children in our school.

Kind regards,

Mr Nick Burstow

Head Teacher
